Animal Care
About This Course
Students taking this course are exposed to a wide range of animal-related careers. These careers include grooming, veterinary science, animal behavior and training, laboratory/pet shop animal care and management as well as agriculture-related careers. Students will be expected to participate in the disinfecting and sanitizing of the animal living quarters daily. In addition, all students will be required to handle the array of animals that reside in the classroom daily.
Students with animal/hay/dust-related allergies should speak to their pediatrician before beginning the program. In addition, all animals have the potential to bite and scratch. All students will be properly instructed on how to handle all animals properly and safely in the classroom. Students are expected to follow the instructors’ rules to ensure classroom safety.

Career Opportunities
The pet industry is expanding, and the emphasis is on preventive health measures such as proper vaccination, nutrition, and grooming. This course will prepare students for entry-level employment in a variety of settings. Graduates who pursue further education and earn a 2- or 4-year college degree can prepare for the New York State Licensed Veterinary Technician exam. Students may also decide to pursue studies in veterinary science, agricultural studies, biology, or business management. Typical job titles in the field of animal care include veterinary assistant, licensed veterinary technician, pet bather/fluffer/groomer, dog trainer, pet shop manager, animal technologist, veterinarian, and agricultural manager.
