About This Course

In this course, students will learn about the different forms of business ownership, entrepreneurship, management, marketing, and personal finance. During this course, students will help run the school store. All students will have an opportunity to be a cashier, bagger, greeter, stock person, and counter person on a rotating basis throughout the year. In addition, students will receive instruction in basic business procedures that may be used in a retail environment. These include telephone etiquette and message taking, formatting inventory and payroll spreadsheets in Excel, copier and fax machine use, and basic business math. Students will learn and practice good customer service skills, teamwork, and workplace ethics. Students will develop professional skills, including time management, teamwork, interpersonal relations, effective communication, and organizational skills.

Students Will Learn:

  • Operate a cash register
  • Create store displays
  • Develop marketing materials
  • Monitor inventory and stock
  • Prepare and serve food and beverage items
  • Use Microsoft Excel to prepare inventory spreadsheets
  • Operate various business machines (computer, copier, fax, etc.)

Career Opportunities

Students who complete this course will be qualified to seek entry-level positions in the retail services industry that allow for continued personal and professional advancement based on their desires and abilities. Some graduates attend continuing education programs to increase their skills. Typical job titles in retail include customer service representative, sales representative, cashier, inventory clerk, store manager and stock person.

Students who meet all eligibility requirements may participate in supervised, real-world, work-based learning offerings that include internships or paid Co-Op experiences at workplace sites such as:
